Agile on the Beach Coding Retreat: 8th & 9th October 2019, Bedruthan Steps Hotel and Spa

A two-day master class for software developers to reflect, practice and hone their craft…  and as it is an AOTB event there is a typically Cornish feast thrown into the mix.

This retreat is open to individuals and teams of all abilities, the only prerequisite is some experience of software development and a desire to learn.

What does it involve?

Over the two days we will discuss and practice software craftsmanship, communication and creativity, focusing on TDD and pair programming, to try out new ideas and revisit old ones.

Deliberate practice involves careful repetition and reflection to master, explore and understand a technique, to know its boundaries, to make it second nature. You may code every day, but often a change is as good as a rest.

Using Jon Jagger’s innovative and collaborative cyber-dojo environment, you will get to re-examine coding habits and debate modern practices with experts and peers. With time to look at different code and varying approaches, this retreat will open your mind to alternative ways of approaching old problems with great rewards.

The venue for this retreat is the award winning Bedruthan Steps Hotel and Spa. Nestled in the cliffs overlooking the turquoise waters and glorious sandy beach of Mawgan Porth, on the North Cornwall coast, it is only a 5 minute drive from Newquay Airport.

The airport now has daily direct flights to London Heathrow, Southend, Manchester and Birmingham.

The two days will be led by Kevlin Henney and Jon Jagger, both experts in their field.

Kevlin is an author, presenter, and consultant on software development. He has written on the subject of computer programming and development practice for many magazines and sites, including Better Software, The Register, C/C++ Users Journal, Application Development Advisor, JavaSpektrum, C++ Report, Java Report, EXE, and Overload. He is a member of the IEEE Software Advisory Board. Henney is also coauthor of books on patterns and editor of 97 Things Every Programmer Should Know.

Jon is a software consultant specialising in practice, process, test driven development and complex-adaptive systems thinking. He built cyber- to promote deliberate practice for software developers. Jon has worked with Accenture, Aviva, Cisco, Ericsson, Friends Provident, HP, Microsoft, Opera, Ordnance Survey, RBS, Reuters, Renault F1, Schlumberger, Tandberg and many many more. He’s the co-author of the Deep C/C++ slide deck and has had some C# books published. He’s also the ex-ECMA Task Group 2 C# convenor and ex- ACCU conference chairman.

Did you mention a feast?

Yes! Gather around long wooden trestle tables starting with for a delicious nibbles to start, then tuck into hearty platters of locally sourced food whilst gazing out onto the spectacular Cornish coast. After the plates are cleared, wrap up warm, grab a blanket and gather around the fire pit amongst the dunes to toast marshmallows on the open flames whilst listening to the Atlantic lapping onto the beach below as the sun dips into the horizon.
