Students challenge perspectives of Cornish tech sector at Agile on the Beach

Agile on the Beach were delighted to display Falmouth Students work at this years conference who have been working on a project to challenge the perspectives of the tech sector here in Cornwall.

The work is the outcome of a collaboration project between Software Cornwall and Level 2 Falmouth University BA(Hons) Graphic Design students to brand and promote Cornwall as the UK’s Silicon Valley

The short video provides an array of the work produced by students as part of their degree course as a collection of initial ideas for branding and advertising, challenging perceptions of the sector and identifying innovative and distruptive ways to help raise the awareness and image of the growing and diverse tech community in Cornwall.

Branding Digital Cornwall

Software Cornwall hope to secure funds and work collaboratively to take the project further.  If you would like to collaborate or get involved with the next stages of the project please contact

Thanks from our community go to Lecturer Darren Whittington for his lead on this innovative project and to the students for their brilliant and inspiring work.

Cornwall Ranked 2nd highest growth cluster in UK Tech Nation Report

Cornwall’s growing tech community has been featured in the 2016 Tech Nation report produced by the Government funded programme Tech City and Nesta.

Download the Full report Tech Nation 2016

Cornwalls Capital and surrounding areas gained the attention of the Tech Nation Team following the high response to its survey run in late 2015.

Featured as an emerging cluster it ranks 2nd for growth in the UK with 153% Growth in Digital Turnover, exceeding Londons 101% (2010-2014)

AIMG_4288dditional statistics reported include a +127% GVA (2010-2014), £31 million Digital GVA and a digital density of 17%.

“A rural location has traditionally been seen as a weakness. Cornwall is dissolving that urban myth, driven by superfast connectivity, a pipeline for delivering tech skills and a strong collaborative community.” Belinda Waldock

The report features Agile on the Beach and local businesses Headforwards, Crowdfunder, Sullivan Cuff and Bluefruit as well as Truro Penwith and Cornwall Colleges.

It paints an attractive picture for the area highlighting Cornwalls Superfast connectivity and strong community, as well as our strong heritage of being leaders of engineering revolutions!

One of Software Cornwalls key objectives as a network is to help improve the visibility and awareness of our cluster nationally so we are delighted to have been able to co-ordinate and organise the Tech Nation feature with the help of the community.

Thank you all for your contributions and support of Software Cornwall in making this possible!  We will be sharing the report to help highlight and raise awareness of our sector both here in Cornwall and more widely.

Photo Blog : Anna-Jayne Metcalfe from Riverblade Overview of Agile on the Beach 2013

agile026The third Agile on the Beach conference was held on Tremough Campus, Penryn (near Falmouth in Cornwall) on 5th and 6th September 2013. As last year, the event attracted not only tech businesses, but also non-tech organisations (e.g. a legal practice and a university department) who are applying the principles of agile software development to run processes and workflows within their own organisations. Done well, agile thinking and principles can be applied to just about any workflow – it doesn’t have to be about software.

This years conference was a great success by any metric. It sold out several times (with the organisers somehow managing to squeeze in more places each time as more people kept trying to register…) and that was certainly reflected in the energy visible at the event. I think in the end there were something like 170 delegates, which is a big increase on last year and compares very favourably with the 350-400 or so you can expect at the (far more established) ACCU Conference which we also take part in.

As others are writing far more eloquently than I about the detail of some of the sessions presented at the conference, I’m going to present more of a visual overview of the event – call it a photoblog post, if you like.

Agile Business Sessions

Agile on the Beach. Is this a real conference? I was sceptical, until I checked the 2012 lineup and discovered that this conference – probably more than other agile conferences – tackled business as well as technical challenges. It’s also pretty good value. So I packed my bags and went to Falmouth… read more at
